TORVASTIN belongs to the class of medications known as statins, prescribed to lower the increased levels of blood lipids, such as cholesterol and triglycerides.
TORVASTIN’s active ingredient is atorvastatin, a competitive inhibitor of hydroxymethylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase, the rate-determining enzyme in the biosynthesis of cholesterol. Cholesterol is a naturally occurring molecule, essential for the body growth, a major structural component of the cell membranes. Increased blood levels of cholesterol though have been shown to relate to increased risk of cardiovascular diseases.
TORVASTIN is used to decrease high blood lipid levels, when a diet low in fat and a modified lifestyle have failed.
If there is an increased risk for cardiovascular disease, TORVASTIN can be used even at physiological cholesterol blood levels, complementary to a diet low in fat.
Atorvastatin was discovered in 1985 in the laboratories of Warner-Lambert‘s Parke-Davis in Ann Arbor, Michigan by the group of Bruce Roth. It was introduced in clinical practice in 1997.
