What Lycis® oral solution is and what it is used for
-
- Lycis® 1000mg/5ml oral solution contains metformin, a medicine for the treatment of diabetes. It belongs to a group of medicines called biguanides
- Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that enables the body to take up glucose (sugar) from the blood. Your body uses glucose to produce energy or stores it for future use.
- If you have diabetes, your pancreas does not produce enough insulin or your body is not able to use the insulin it produces properly. This leads to a high level of glucose in the blood. LYCIS Oral solution helps to lower your blood glucose to a level as close to normal as possible.
- If you are an overweight adult, taking Lycis® oral solution over a long period also helps to reduce the risk of complications associated with diabetes. Lycis® Oral solution is associated with either stable body weight or modest weight loss.
- Lycis® Oral solution is used to treat patients with type 2 diabetes (also called “non-insulin-dependent diabetes”) when diet and exercise alone are not sufficient to control blood glucose levels. It is used especially in overweight patients.
- Adults can take Lycis® Oral solution on its own or together with other medicines for the treatment of diabetes (oral medicines or insulin).
Children aged 10 years and over and adolescents can take this medicine on its own or together with insulin.

How to take Lycis® oral solution
Always take this medicine strictly as your doctor has told you. If you are unsure, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Lycis® oral solution cannot replace the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Continue to follow any dietary advice your doctor has given you and exercise regularly.
Children aged 10 years and over and adolescents usually start with 500 mg (2.5ml) or 850 mg (4.25ml) Lycis® oral solution once a day. The maximum daily dose is 2000 mg (10ml) divided into 2 or 3 doses. Treatment of children aged between 10 and 12 years is only recommended on specific advice from your doctor, as experience in this age group is limited.
Adults usually start with 500 mg (2.5ml) or 850 mg (4.25ml) Lycis® oral solution two or three times a day. The maximum daily dose is 3000 mg (15ml) divided into 3 doses.
If you have reduced kidney function, your doctor may prescribe a lower dose.
If you are also taking insulin, your doctor will advise you on how to start taking Lycis® oral solution.
Monitoring
Your doctor will arrange for you to have regular blood glucose tests and will adjust the dose of Lycis® oral solution to your blood glucose levels. Make sure you inform your doctor regularly. This is particularly important for children and adolescents or if you are an elderly person.
- Your doctor will also check at least once a year that your kidneys are working properly. You may need more frequent tests if you are an elderly person or if your kidneys are not working properly. Take Lycis® oral solution with or after a meal. This way you will avoid adverse reactions that affect your digestion.
- If you take one dose a day, take it in the morning (with breakfast)
- If you have been told to take two doses a day, take them in the morning (with breakfast) and in the evening (with dinner)
- If you have been told to take three doses a day, take them in the morning (with breakfast), at midday (with lunch) and in the evening (with dinner)
- If, after a while, you think the effect of this medicine is too strong or too weak, tell your doctor or pharmacist.
- Use either the graduated 10 ml dosing spoon or the syringe (following the instructions below) to give the correct dose
Lycis® oral solution is for oral use only.
A graduated syringe for oral use and a syringe adapter that is fitted to the bottle, Press-In Bottle Adapter (PIBA), as well as a dosing cup, are supplied with the product.
The bottle adapter for the syringe should only be used if the product is administered with the oral syringe.
- Open the bottle by pressing the child-resistant cap down very firmly and turning it anticlockwise. On first use, insert the bottle adapter tightly into the neck of the bottle, ensuring that it fits well to avoid any leakage.
- Insert the syringe into the opening of the bottle adapter
- Turn the bottle upside down and fill the syringe with a small amount of the solution by pushing the plunger down.
- Push the plunger up to remove any bubbles.
- Pull the plunger to the graduation mark on the syringe that corresponds to the amount in ml prescribed by your doctor.
- Remove the filled syringe from the bottle in an upright position.
- Release the contents of the syringe into the mouth. Repeat steps 2 to 7 as necessary to achieve the required dose prescribed by your doctor.
- Rinse the syringe and replace the cap on the bottle (the syringe adapter should remain in place). Allow the syringe to dry before using it again.
Note
If necessary, Lycis® oral solution can be administered via gastric, duodenal and nasal feeding tube, which should be flushed twice with 10 ml of water immediately after administration.
If you take more Lycis® oral solution than you should, you may experience lactic acidosis. The symptoms of lactic acidosis are non-specific and include vomiting, abdominal pain with muscle cramps, a general feeling of being unwell with severe fatigue, and difficulty breathing. Additional symptoms are reduced body temperature and heart rate. If you notice any of these symptoms you should seek medical help immediately, as lactic acidosis can lead to coma. Stop taking Lycis® oral solution immediately and inform your doctor or the nearest hospital straight away.
Do not take a double dose to make up for the dose you forgot. Take the next dose at the usual time.
If you have any further questions on the use of this medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
