<\/span><\/div><\/div><\/div>[\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_empty_space height=”45px”][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text]LYCIS<\/strong><\/span> contains the active substance metformin hydrochloride, which is a biguanide<\/a><\/span> with anti-hyperglycemic effects.<\/p>\n

The origin of metformin is found in the plant Galega Officinalis<\/em>, which has been used traditionally in the folk medicine and which is rich in biguanides.<\/p>\n

Biguanide<\/span><\/a> derivatives were traditionally used in the 1920s and 1930s in the treatment of diabetes mellitus but were eventually abandoned mainly due to the advent of insulin.<\/p>\n

During the 100 years that came along after its discovery, metformin has erased an adventurous path: it was synthesized in 1920, then put aside for 20 years, brought back to the foreground in 1940 and examined as an active drug in the treatment of malaria. Further research investigations followed by the French doctor Jean Sterne, whose research work in the \u201850s focused on metformin\u2019s effectiveness in the management of diabetes and ultimately led into the approval of metformin in the treatment of diabetes mellitus in France and the United Kingdom in 1957. \u00a0It took though 37 years for metformin to be approved by the FDA in the USA. Upon its approval, numerous research and clinical studies established it as the most prescribed drug, for oral administration, in the management of type 2 diabetes, while it seems to have a multi-faceted beneficial effect on other functions of the body.<\/p>\n

In clinical studies the use of metformin hydrochloride has been associated with the maintenance, or even a slight decrease in body weight, and it also has a beneficial effect on lipid metabolism.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, it is included in <\/em>the World Health Organization\u2018s List of Essential<\/span><\/em> Medicines<\/em><\/span><\/a>,<\/span> the most safe and effective medicines in a health system.<\/em><\/p>\n

LYCIS<\/strong><\/span> oral solution is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus, especially in overweight patients, when treatment through appropriate diet and exercise alone does not result in adequate glycemic control.<\/p>\n
